Garfield’s presidency, though short-lived, was notable for his embodiment of the American dream. Raised by a single mother on a modest farm in Ohio after his father passed away when he was very young, Garfield’s achievements were extraordinary. He worked as a janitor while studying, became a college president, served as a preacher, and fought as one of the youngest Union Army generals during the Civil War. He was deeply committed to civil rights, championing the 13th, 14th, and 15th Amendments that abolished slavery and protected Black suffrage. Garfield also played a key role in creating the federal Department of Education and argued cases before the Supreme Court.
The tragedy of his presidency lies in its abrupt end. Garfield had begun making strides toward civil-service reform with the Pendleton Act, which sought to reduce political patronage by establishing merit-based appointments. Unfortunately, he never got to see these efforts come to fruition. His assassination overshadowed his potential legacy.
Central to the story is Charles Guiteau, played by Matthew Macfadyen, a disgruntled and delusional office seeker convinced that he had played a key role in Garfield’s election victory. When his aspirations for a government position were dashed, Guiteau believed removing Garfield would ensure the success of the Arthur administration and his place within it. The series traces Guiteau’s descent into madness and ultimate decision to fatally shoot Garfield in the back at the Baltimore and Potomac train station in Washington, D.C.
The aftermath was long and painful. Garfield did not die immediately but lingered for several months, plagued by infection and medical mismanagement. Historians widely consider that his death was hastened by the poor medical care he received. In the series, the complex political and social atmosphere of post-Civil War America is vividly portrayed, highlighting the turmoil Garfield faced during his brief time in office.
